November 2004 - Holmwood House were Runners Up in the York Tourism awards in the Guest House and Self Catering category.

(The winner was a self catering establishment, which suggests that we must have been best guest house!)

Holmwood House wins ETC SILVER AWARD again in 2004 for the quality of accommodation and service provided.

In the most recent inspection for the Regional Tourist Board, our 4 Diamonds accolade and Silver Award were re-confirmed this year 2004, in recognition of our continued efforts to increase levels of comfort and customer service.

We are delighted with the awards as they honour the committment and capabilities of our staff, on whom we relied heavily during Rosie's studies for an MA and Bill's protracted illness, after an accident. I am glad to say that Bill is now fully recovered and Rosie has only one assignment to fulfil for her MA to be complete.

1. ROMANTIC LUXURY AT HOLMWOOD HOUSE

Our top luxury room, with hand carved pine, king sized four poster bed, with matching furniture, is still our most popular room - with honeymooners, birthday and other anniversary celebrations - or just the plain romantic. The decor is realised in a pale lavender and antique white theme, using an unusually subtle modern floral pattern wallpaper with elongated images of plants and butterflies. The window drapes are heavy cream/white cotton rustic fabric, with an inset mid lavender border, while the bed has a unique ruched and puffed canopy in ivory wild silk, falling from the ceiling rose.

The bathroom carries on the lavender and antique white theme, adding the motif of a pink stylised rose in stained glass in the door and window, which is also taken up in the tiling. The very large corner bath is a twin spa and there is also an excellent shower.

2. WHAT IS NEW AT HOLMWOOD?

New Room Decor
Over the low season we have been working hard on improvements in our rooms and public areas. We have done one major room redecoration - majoring on an old gold and antique white colour theme with antique brass fitments. This has resulted in a striking room.

Sitting Room
The sitting room redecoration uses a traditional Toile de Joie design in 'up to the moment' lavender and white.

Stairways and Halls
New jade green heavy carpets with a small pink/beige motif have been laid in the public areas and the stairs - so we are all 'walking on air' as we move around the hotel.

3. POPULAR POMEGRANATE DESIGN CONTINUES A FIRM FAVOURITE

We were inspired by the master bedroom at Cragside, the Victorian stately home of the Armstrongs, which uses the William Morris 'Pomegranate' design to offer a cosy, interesting and varied design in strong, yet muted, colours ranging from beige to green to apricot to red. The brass fourposter bed has a muslin canopy with a gold paisley design tied with rich gold tassells.

The heavy green velveteen drapes are caught back with rich gold ties. The lawn green carpet accentuates the spacious feel of the room, which is highlighted by dark wood furniture, including a flamboyantly carved antique table mirror.

The pictures pursue lyrical Victorian themes.

We like it so much we would like to move in ourselves!

Incidentally, Cragside was the first great house in the UK designed with electricity as a basic service (not added in afterwards)

OLD NEWS

In 1998, we were pleased to donate a Two Night Gourmet Break in York as part of a week's holiday in Britain, to the San Francisco Eden Medical Centre's celebrity dinner and and auction to raise $900,000 to re-equip their Trauma Unit with diagnostic equipment for the Angiography Suite

The successful bidder, Dawn Redlaczyk, who was a senior nurse at the Eden Medical Centre Trauma Unit, said:

"We loved York and had the best food in the UK ....".

She and her husband, Barry, had stayed at Holmwood House and dined at Melton's Restaurant on their first night and Cafe Concerto on the second night and were delighted with the Gourmet Break.

Meltons and Cafe Concerto, along with The Blue Bicycle, are the restaurants offered in our Summer Gourmet Extravaganza........see link..
