There is a large private car park to the rear of the hotel where guests may prefer to leave their car as the city walls are only 7-8 minutes walk away, with the National Railway Museum, Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre, the Shambles and many other attractions within easy walking distance. York has a variety of night life: the two fine theaters, good restaurants and country pubs will ensure a lasting memory of the city. The hotel also makes an ideal base from which to explore the North Yorkshire moors and James Heriot's Dales, with such renowned features as Castle Howard, fountains Abbey, Rievaulx, Harewood house and Hutton-le-Hole.

For the more sporting in nature there are several golf courses and extensive scenic cycle ways in and around York. The famous Knavesmire, York's racecourse, is close to Holmwood House.
